Alex's Adventures in Numberland

by Alex Bellos

Dispatches from the wonderful world of mathematics

Alex Bellos’s book is part travelogue and part history lesson. It is both hugely entertaining and surprising in equal measure.

Beginning at chapter zero, before mathematics began around 10,000 years’ ago, this whistle-stop tour takes in counting chimpanzees, crisps and crochet, a Hindu seer and lightening-fast human calculators, all with an over-arching sense of wonder.

Curiously, counting is a cultural issue and that, together with the role of numbers in almost every aspect of our everyday lives, is explored in a gently humorous fashion.

A subject often seen as dull and challenging is here rendered inspiring and approachable.
