Big Local learning programme (with NANM)

Shared Intelligence is working with the National Association for Neighbourhood Management (NANM) to create a learning and networking programme for community volunteers in 150 English neighbourhoods which have each been awarded £1million to spend or invest over ten years. This forms part of Big Local, the Lottery’s flagship programme overseen by Local Trust, to distribute £200 million to 150 neighbourhoods to support community-led change.

The learning programme is integral to the ethos of Big Local which seeks to create change by building skills and capacity, and by enabling communities to find different ways invest in change – not simply giving grants, but also by stimulating the economy and investing in social entrepreneurs and community enterprise.

The programme consists of action teams, skills and thematic workshops, study visits and the creation of buddying links between areas who share something in common. The activities take major themes such as health and eating, transport, access to work, access to credit, and improving community spaces, and translate these into practical learning experiences. With more than 1,000 volunteers involved in Big Local, only a small proportion can ever attend an individual event. So to increase the reach and benefit of the programme we and the NANM have developed shareable resources and “How Tos” so that those who take pass-on what they have learnt.
