More about John Houghton

John joined Shared Intelligence in November 2007. He was worked with a wide range of clients, from central government departments to small charities.

He joined from the Department of Communities and Local Government where he was responsible for the department’s policies on community empowerment, community cohesion, tenant engagement and youth involvement. In this role, John managed the £42m Single Community Programme. John also spent time in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship and six months at the London School of Economics, working on the Independent Birmingham Housing Commission. John co-authored Jigsaw Cities with Professor Anne Power and has written for the Guardian, New Start and a range of journals and websites.

John’s recent projects include:

  • working with the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Economic Partnership to develop their Strategic Economic Plan
  • facilitating the Centre for Local Economic Strategies Board away day
  • working with councillors and officers on a strategy for the future of Wembley
  • evaluating the Wales-wide European Structural Fund partnership development programme
  • developing the Margate Renewal Framework to re-balance the local housing market and tackle multiple deprivation
  • evaluating the £50m Kings Norton New Deal for Communities programme in Birmingham
  • supporting community groups in Hackney Wick, Hounslow and Hastings to develop a plan using  National Lottery Fund investment
  • supporting Home Housing Group to develop their ‘neighbourhood offer’ to residents
  • working with the Leader and Chief Executive of the London Borough of Lambeth on the future of their Arms-Length Management Organisation
  • writing the strategy for tackling inequality in North Wiltshire
  • Developing the implementation plan for the Newcastle Empowerment Framework
  • Carrying out an independent review of the Thurrock Urban Development Corporation

John is regularly invited to speak at events on housing and regeneration and was recently on the advisory board for projects run by ResPublica, IPPR North and the Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion. He is Co-Chair of the Urban Forum, a national charity that supports community groups to take advantage of their rights to shape their local area. He has a BA from Oxford University and a MA from the University of London.
